To date, MP Motorsport had not yet officially announced a driver for the 2026 FREC season. One of the two new teams that have chosen to enter the European competition – the other being Rodin Motorsport – has decided to put its faith in one of its pleasant surprises of the winter. Kazakh driver Alexander Abkhazava will be the Dutch team's first driver in the continental championship, coming off a less than convincing season in Eurocup-3.
Finishing 24th in Spanish F4 in 2023, ninth in Eurocup-3 in 2024, and then 12th last year with KCL by MP in the Iberian championship, he hasn't exactly been outstanding. Yet, it was he who secured the very first victory of the season in the Middle East Formula Regional series this winter. Winner of Race 1 in Abu Dhabi, the MP driver also claimed a second victory in Race 3 in Dubai, demonstrating an unexpected ease behind the wheel of the new Tatuus T-326.
Considered one of the league's top contenders, Alexander Abkhazava finished third in the winter competition. Surpassing Americans Alex Powell and Sebastian Wheldon, and not far behind the two leaders Rashid Al Dhaheri and Kean Nakamura-Berta, the Kazakh driver will nevertheless have to prove himself. With MP being a highly anticipated, established, and, above all, successful team in categories above FREC, this talent pool will need to be efficient in order to attract future stars, like Prema or Trident, true benchmarks of the series.
