While Giorgio Roda had been leading from pole position in the #5 United Oreca 07 LMP2, it was the sister car, the #6, currently driven by Ben Hanley, that took control of the race at the halfway point of the 4 Hours of Sepang.
A Safety Car period disrupted the start of the new ALMS season due to the off of the track by the #85 R-ACE GP LMP3 car. At the same time, rain, often torrential in Malaysia, began to fall, as it had during Free Practice 2 earlier in the weekend. Under normal conditions, the choice of rain tires would have been obvious.
However, it was only a brief downpour that hit the Sepang circuit, and even worse, some sections of it! A game of bluff ensued, with some drivers remaining on slick tires while others opted for grooved tires. In this game of chance, the United team was faring best at the halfway point, with the #6 car ahead of the #5 of Grégoire Saucy, who was involved in an incident at the restart, and the #47 of Cetilar Racing, driven by Charles Milesi.
However, everything could change, as the rain is approaching Sepang again…
