Victorious at Imola to start the season, the Bavarian car pays tribute this year, through eight special liveries, to BMW's history in motorsport, primarily in Endurance racing and... 24 Hours of Le Mans.
For this special livery dedicated to the Le Mans classic, Team WRT explains that it drew its inspiration from BMW's very first overall victory at Le Mans. And no, it's not (just) 1999, but rather 1995, when the McLaren F1 The car driven by Yannick Dalmas, Masanori Sekiya, and JJ Lehto was powered by a Bavarian engine. The development of the McLaren F1 engine then contributed to the development of the BMW V12 LMR, which won in 1999, again with Yannick Dalmas at the wheel, alongside Joachim Winkelhock and Pierluigi Martini.
"It's a tribute to daring engineering, old-school motor racing, and the courageous drivers who took the wheel of these racing machines," Anthony McIntosh explained about the new livery.
