In addition to BMW in GTP, the qualifying rounds for the 24 Hours of Daytona held this Thursday offered another surprise: the pole position of a Ford Mustang GT3 in the GTD Pro category. The American manufacturer even scored a one-two since Frédéric Vervisch took second place behind Mike Rockenfeller. The experienced German (41 years old), winner of the Florida classic in the general classification in 2010, knew how to get his tires to the right temperature despite the winter cold that permeates the Daytona International Speedway.
« It's obviously a big day, Rockenfeller could smile. It doesn’t mean much for the race, but for us as a team with Ford, in their second year with the Mustang, I think it’s a big achievement. So it’s something we wanted to get. We really prepared for it. The car was fantastic to drive, as you can imagine. I could really push it. The big difference, I don’t know why nobody did it, is I pitted right after my out lap and waited for the brake temperature to get to the tire. It was so cold that I had a lot more grip. It was a good decision and it worked. That’s why we’re on pole. »
