The International Automobile Federation (FIA) and the Formula 1 will inaugurate a new award at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In addition to the traditional trophy and the bottle of champagne, the winner of a Grand Prix will also receive a medal of their own. Depending on the authorities, these medals may be kept by the pilots “as personal proof of their success. »
Traditionally, the trophies obtained during a Grand Prix are kept by the team, which can then decide to provide replicas to the drivers. With this new personal award, the FIA and F1 want the winners to keep a record of their success for “commemorate their exploit”. Medals have already been distributed to the winner of Sprint races since their introduction in 2021.
Still according to the authorities, “The medals highlight the long and illustrious history of the winner of each Grand Prix by marking the race number since the start of the world championship in 1950.” The first to be awarded this new medal will therefore be the winner of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this Sunday.
