McLaren unveils a statue in tribute to Mika Häkkinen

McLaren paid tribute to one of the greatest drivers in its history by unveiling a statue of Mika Häkkinen at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking. Revealed this week, the artwork joins the British team's "boulevard," a space dedicated to the figures who have shaped its history. The statue depicts the Finn at one of the most important moments of his career: his world championship title win at the 1998 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. That season, the former driver of Formula 1 had given McLaren its first drivers' title since Ayrton Senna in 1991, before retaining its crown the following year.

Having joined McLaren in 1993 after his Formula 1 debut with Lotus, Mika Häkkinen became one of the team's most iconic drivers. In nine seasons with the British outfit, he won 20 Grands Prix and two World Drivers' Championships, notably forging a memorable rivalry with Michael Schumacher at the end of the 1990 years.

Through this inauguration, McLaren continues its commitment to celebrating the individuals who have contributed to building its legacy in Formula 1. On social media, the team paid tribute "A true racing legend" and its "incredible contribution" to the team and to motorsport as a whole. Nearly thirty years after his first world title, Mika Häkkinen sees one of the most significant moments of his career immortalized in bronze at McLaren's headquarters. He remains closely connected to the team today, notably through his daughter Ella Häkkinen, a member of the McLaren Driver Development Program since November 2025.
