Payne notably benefited from a shorter second stint, allowing him to build a nice lead over the two drivers who fought for victory on Saturday, Cam Waters and Chase Mostert. The two men failed 6 and 8 seconds behind the 21-year-old driver. For Payne, it was the final stint of the first race of the weekend that made him realize just how much of a pace advantage he could have on shorter, more aggressive stints.
“It’s incredible, especially after two more difficult rounds for us”, he explained. “I knew I had a good car on Saturday, my pace was very good in the last stint, so to be able to replicate that with a different strategy is really great for me and for the team. They gave me a great car, and I'm proud to give it back with victory. We didn't have to save at any time, we had to attack all the time, it was difficult but very satisfying. »
Satisfaction was clearly not there for the Triple Eight team. A true juggernaut of the discipline, the team Red Bull had to settle for Broc Feeney's seventh place as his best result this Sunday. Worse, championship leader Will Brown suffered an ordeal after an accident on the first lap of the race.
