The Japanese, always very comfortable in the Safari Rally, finished 14″ ahead of the Hyundai de Ott Tänak, still in third place overall. The Estonian has, however, made a serious comeback against Kalle Rovanperä, who lost 1'21 due to a puncture in this timed section. Elfyn Evans is therefore leading the rally, despite two errors in the last kilometer of the special, which saw him drop back to third place in the SS classification.
While the rough nature of the Rally Kenya was evident in the first half of the stage, the second half was dominated by mud, and drivers had to be extra careful to avoid getting stuck in it. A midday stop at the service park will allow for a number of minor repairs to be made before the second loop of the day begins, with a run through the same three stages, starting at 13:05 p.m.
