IMSA – Starts and points allocation changed in 2017

So far in IMSA Sportscar Championship, the various events on the calendar saw the Prototype and Prototype Challenge categories begin the races via a rolling start, a few moments before the GTLM and GTD categories.

This procedure will not be renewed in 2017 from the 24 Hours of Daytona (January 28-29), since IMSA officials have announced that from now on, the peloton will start in one go.

“Although we have seen some advantages in separating the starts, the fact that all competitors start the race at the same time will provide more excitement for our fans, on the circuit or on television, said IMSA President and CEO Ed Bennett.

The 2017 championship will feature breathtaking machines. By bringing everyone together, the starts of our races will be much more exciting and will set the tone for the race towards the checkered flag. »

In the new features of the sporting regulations unveiled by IMSA, the points allocation system has also been revised for 2017. “If all drivers in a car meet the driving time requirements, the car and all drivers will earn the number of points associated with their finishing position, mentions the press release.

If a team's drivers do not meet the drive time requirements, the car and drivers will be placed at the end of their class in the order of finish and will receive the points associated with that position.

In addition, the fastest lap in the race in each class will provide a bonus point to each driver of the car concerned. The bonus point awarded at each meeting to all drivers and teams who started the race will be deleted. »
