The GTD PRO will replace the GTLM from 2022

Unsurprisingly, GTEs will no longer be accepted in IMSA next year, and will give way to GT3s entrusted to professional drivers.

The GTD PRO will replace the GTLM from 2022

On the sidelines of the 59th edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona, theIMSA formalized a small revolution within its championship. In accordance with what we revealed to you last August (see Ah n°2275), the GTLM is experiencing its last season in the North American championship.

This category, which incorporates the GTE regulations, is losing momentum, particularly due to the upcoming emergence of the LMDh. A phenomenon that we explained to you at length in our first issue of the year (see Ah n°2293).

So after Ford and Porsche, the GTLM lost BMW, which this year will only compete in the four rounds of theEndurance Cup. From next year, the premier class of GT across the Atlantic will take the name GTD PRO and will pit GT3s against each other which can be incubated by official teams and entrusted to 100% professional crews.

Private teams, as well as Pro-Am or even Am-Am crews, will have the choice of registering in GTD PRO or GTD, an already existing category which mixes professionals and gentlemen drivers.

« The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship has always brought together the greatest manufacturers, teams and GT drivers on the planet, emphasizes series president John Doonan. We believe that GTD PRO offers manufacturers and teams the best opportunity today to continue this legacy into the future. We expect a significant number of manufacturers to be present at the launch of this category, on the occasion of the 60th edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona (in January 2022. Editor’s note). »

And for good reason, nine manufacturers are currently present in GTD. As a reminder, 2022 will mark the entry into force of a new GT3 regulation. It is the latter which will be eligible in GTD PRO, as well as the current GT3s equipped with an evo kit. Michelin will, of course, be the sole tire manufacturer in the category.
