Abiteboul: Renault reliability impacted by three aspects

Renault managed to make up part of the gap with engines Mercedes et Ferrari, but the Losange Power Units once again suffered from poor reliability this year. The French engine manufacturer notably had to endure criticism from some of its customer teams, all the more penalized as they often had to exceed the limits of elements condemning their cars to fall back on the Grand Prix grids.

Cyril Abiteboul, the general director of Renault Sport Racing, returned to the problems encountered by Renault in AUTOhebdo by highlighting the elements which harmed the reliability of the engines of Viruses-Châtillon.

“One: if we managed to find the way to use certain parts, in order to generate performance, they were placed under constraints. Hence our reliability problems. Two: one of our customer teams, Toro Rosso, did not meet our cooling specifications. Hence its repeated breakages. Three: we experienced a quality problem with an external supply, still on the hybrid part”, explained Cyril Abiteboul.
