Alonso rules out no possibility for 2018

With a team McLaren whose results are far from the initial expectations upon his arrival in 2015, the future of Fernando Alonso once again came to the forefront on the sidelines of the Spanish Grand Prix.

And once again, the Iberian driver recalled the tedious work carried out by the McLaren – Honda tandem to remedy a situation which seems to have no solution. “McLaren and Honda have a long-term partnership with very strong commitment from both parties, underlines Alonso.

Right now, things are not going as initially hoped, but there are a lot of efforts to improve the situation... They have to find a way to extract performance and power from the engine. We hope to be able to see progress in the very short term and fight for something big this year. »

All possible options

However, Fernando Alonso did not hesitate to put pressure on the British-Japanese agreement, stressing that the progress made would greatly depend on the contours of its future.

“This is my last year of contract with McLaren, said the double world champion. I will have to think about it after the summer, because the period is not favorable, with the Indy 500 on top of that. Around September or October, I will have to think about what I will do next year.

If it's time to find other challenges outside of Formula 1, or if there is the opportunity to win the championship in F1, which is my main goal, I am very open to everything.

The cars with the 2017 rules are fun to drive. F1 has become itself again in a sense. I love this Formula 1 and my intention and first priority next year is to race here. But not just for racing, but also for winning.

I'm happy with McLaren, but we're not winning. If, before September or October, I see the possibility that we will be able to win in 2018, I will be happy to stay with the team. If not, I'll be more than happy to talk with anyone. »

Remember that Fernando Alonso will compete in the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend before heading to the United States for the fortnight of the Indianapolis 500, contested with the trio McLaren, Honda and Andretti.
