AMG will strengthen its ties with the Mercedes F1 team in 2021

Heading towards electric… via increased exposure in Formula 1, where state-of-the-art 2014 turbo hybrid V6s have been evolving since 1.6.

Mercedez-Benz unveiled its new strategic orientations on Tuesday with the electrification of the German manufacturer's different ranges and divisions as a guideline.

Among the departments concerned, AMG, the Étoile sports vehicle specialist, will benefit from strengthened links with the F2021 team from 1. Brackley (United Kingdom), whose name already includes the label of the famous preparer.

As Renault with his brand Alpine, Mercedes intends to rely even more on the global window that F1 offers to promote AMG models as the division prepares to go electric.

« AMG was originally a motorsport brand: founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the "A" and "M" in AMG, produced production cars solely to finance their racing activities, based on the model that found in certain Italian or British manufacturers in the past, said Ola Källenius, President of the Daimler Group, during a virtual presentation.

We will use the technology developed with F1 hybrid powertrains and explore innovative new sources of performance, before putting it all into our AMG cars ».

The Swede also mentioned the Project One hypercar, which consists of “ take an F1 powertrain and put it on the road. It is natural for us to use the leverage of Grands Prix even more for the good of AMG “says Källenius.

While Mercedes has set itself the ambitious objective of having a neutral carbon footprint by 2039, the German manufacturer, which some saw as starting out in F1, is more committed than ever to the premier category. A strategy diametrically opposed to that of Honda, which justified its recent decision to leave the Grand Prix scene by a desire to offset its CO2 emissions by 2050.
