By a simple tweet posted this Monday, January 2, Mohammed Ben Sulayem perhaps gave a lot of hope to all those who would like to launch their own racing team. F1. The president of the FIA said that the watchdog of world motorsport was seeking to attract new teams.
« I have asked my team at the FIA to explore launching an Expression of Interest process for teams potentially interested in joining the Formula 1 world championship.,” he said.
An announcement which risks causing quite a stir since the majority of the 10 current teams are reluctant to welcome new comrades. That is to say that we should share the F1 revenue pie a little more…
What projects are in the works today?
Andretti, the most credible track
This is undoubtedly the most realistic project at the moment. For many months, the Andretti clan has loudly proclaimed its desire to join the great F1 circus. At the end of 2021, the family team was close to taking over Sauber. She then came back with a new proposal, this time a 100% independent structure.
Andretti's goal is to become the 11e, or 12e perhaps, team on the grid from 2024! The project looks great. We are talking here about a team already well established in several international disciplines, which knows the environment very well. Mario, the father, was F1 world champion in 1978 with Lotus. No need to cite the team's infrastructure which has even started the construction of a new headquarters in the Indianapolis area. Andretti even says he is ready to pay the entry fee of 200 million dollars (around 190 million euros) to be paid in 10 equal parts to the current teams. Andretti would already have an agreement with Renault regarding the motorization.
The crazy desires of Calvin Lo
Recently, another name has been added to the list of potential candidates: Calvin Lo. He may not mean anything to you, and that's normal, because he's a man who comes from the business world and has nothing to do with motorsport. A big fan of Formula 1, the Hong Kong-based billionaire would like to be directly involved in the industry as an associate or with his own team. “ We are still investigating 'in what capacity I could be involved in F1, he confided recently in an interview with the English tabloid Daily Star. I'm not smart enough to lead the team! Whatever my involvement, it will be financial."
Close to the owners of Williams, Dorilton Capital, he admitted to having already had contact with various people involved in the world of F1. All this still remains unclear since we have no certainty as to Calvin Lo's motivations and links. To be continued…
What about Porsche?
Et Porsche in all of that ? And yes, because the German manufacturer almost made its return to Formula 1. Finally, the association project with Red Bull fell through when everything seemed to be complete.
However, the brand from Stuttgart (Germany) has not drawn a line under F1. His involvement in the future could then be with an association, but with another team this time. “ We note that Porsche is still in discussions with Formula 1 teams,” even assured the president of the FIA Mohammed Ben Sulayem in last october. In the event of another failure, Porsche could perhaps be tempted by the creation of its own team now that a budgetary ceiling has been introduced...
The FIA has only just launched its Expression of Interest process and will have to convince the current teams to widen the grid. In other words, we will surely have to wait before welcoming an 11e stable.
