Ayrton Senna died 24 years ago at the San Marino GP held on the Imola circuit. The day after the death of Roland Ratzenberger who left the track during qualifying, the driver Williams was the victim of a fatal accident when he went straight into the Tamburello curve while traveling at more than 300 km/h. His death will be announced in the afternoon after he has been evacuated to Bologna hospital.
The San Marino GP will forever remain in the history of the F1 like one of the cursed weekends of the discipline. Rubens Barrichello, a young Jordan driver who had only one full season in F1 at the time, miraculously survived a terrible crash during testing when his car flew into a wall of tires. Roland Ratzenberger will not have this luck, the resident of the Simtek stable losing his life the next day.
Ayrton Senna has three world titles (1988, 1990 and 1991), 41 victories, 80 podiums and 65 poles. But beyond the statistics, the Brazilian will have won the hearts of the public with his temperament, his debut with Toleman and Lotus and his breathtaking duels with Alain Prost in McLaren.
