Bottas: “Incredible things can always happen…”

Take 64 points from Lewis Hamilton while there are 104 left to distribute over the four remaining Grands Prix this season, Mexico included: on paper, the mission is not far from impossible.

More Valtteri Bottas, the only one who can still prevent the Briton from pocketing a 6th world title in 2019, wants to maintain hope as long as he remains mathematically in the race.

« I am not superstitious by nature, replied the recent Suzuka winner when asked in Mexico if he believed in miracles. And incredible things can always happen... I saw others earlier in my career. We never know.

With each passing race things get more complicated for sure but there’s no point saying it’s over until it’s truly over. Obviously, the odds are not very favorable to me, you have to be realistic, but I will take the races one after the other, like I did in Japan, and do everything to win again ».

Mercedes has not shone on the Rodriguez brothers' autodrome these last two seasons, but Hamilton must finish at least on the podium if he wants to have a chance of scoring 14 points more than Bottas and thus be titled on Sunday.

« We suffered from significant tire degradation last year, recalled the Finn, who had to settle for 5th place, one place behind Hamilton. The tires are a little harder this season, which could help us. The car and the settings are different too. We saw in Japan that the car works well in the race, I hope it will be the same on Sunday ».

If the Silver Arrow proves as sharp in Mexico as in Suzuka, the Finn will then have to do everything to climb onto the podium, the only surefire way for him to push back the outcome of the Drivers' championship at least until Austin next week.
