Boullier: “A first step in the right direction”

Compare the situation of McLaren at the end of the first day of 2016 pre-season testing, compared to the same time a year ago, amounts to a big difference. The Woking team, associated with engine manufacturer Honda, was only able to complete 79 laps in four days last year at Jerez, while Jenson Button was able to accumulate 84 loops this Monday at the wheel of the MP4-31.

A positive start for the British clan, which hopes not to relive another complicated season like in 2015. “We stored a good number of laps which is encouraging for a first day of testing, and a clear improvement compared to last year, comments Eric Boullier, competition director of McLaren Racing.

We are not in a position to put forward expectations, these are only the first days, but before thinking about performance, we first need all the tools and data at our disposal. Today is a first step in the right direction, but there is a long road ahead of us, and we take it day by day. »

Some sensor problems slightly disrupted Jenson Button's morning, but the Briton was able to continue his day without major problems. “We were consistent throughout the day, and it was better on the long runs than last year. This is positive because it allows us to discover other weaknesses on the car. »

Fernando Alonso will be in action tomorrow on the Barcelona track.
