Brawn recalls in figures the gap between top 3 and the rest of the field

“Two podiums out of 123 are unacceptable, especially when the technical and financial gap continues to widen. » By proclaiming this sentence in the results of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ross Brawn, Director of Motor Sport at Liberty Media, highlights one of the difficulties of F1 for several years : domination from every point of view of the top 3 Mercedes - Ferrari - Red Bull.

As an example of the gap between the major trio and the other teams, Renault Sport F1 Team would have a budget approximately half that of the top three teams. Renault, whose big boss Carlos Ghosn, was aiming for podiums in 2018, must therefore still wait to return to the top of the basket, the Losange however having to be praised for its progress since its return in 2016.

And if Renault is counting on the future regulations to try to close the gap, it is in this direction that Ross Brawn and the management of the discipline are working, as specified by the Motor Sports director of Liberty Media, to try to remedy an almost untenable situation in the long term.

Indeed, since 2017 and as Brawn noted, only Lance stroll (Williams) and Sergio Pérez (Force India) managed to get onto the podium, twice in Baku, Azerbaijan, alongside Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull drivers. A revealing and somewhat harsh statistic for the discipline.

“This is an issue we are addressing with the FIA and the teams, because the future of Formula 1 depends on it, insists the former technical director of Ferrari. There are different solutions on the table and we all need to accept the fact that we cannot continue like this for much longer.

I don't mean to shock by calling the championship "other", it's just one way of describing the situation and their fight was certainly exciting. However, it's hard for fans to get excited about a battle for eighth place. »
