Button defends his record

Jenson Button is on his way to becoming world champion. The Briton has a lead of 14 points over Rubens Barrichello and 16 points over Sebastian Vettel. Whatever happens, the Brawn GP driver will be world champion if he gets on the podium.

After his six victories in seven races at the start of the season, Jenson Button "taken his foot off the gas" in terms of results, maintaining his lead at the top of the standings without picking up another victory. The Briton denies having lacked audacity.

« I have never started a race wanting to get into the points without wanting to win the race., Button told Sao Paulo. I'm there every time to get the best out of the car. I led the championship throughout the season. It is therefore a different situation for my pursuers. They need to be more aggressive than me. I don't just want to finish in the points, that's never been my goal. But there are situations that you prefer to avoid so as not to have an accident. Sometimes you have to be careful but you also have to know how to be aggressive. I think I had a good balance between these two attitudes. »

In a comfortable situation in the championship, Jenson Button knows that he owes this status of favorite for the title thanks to his start to the season. But the Briton also shows that he knew how to be strong to maintain his spring advantage. “ There are 17 races in the season and I was able to keep my lead during the last few events. After Monaco, I was 14 or 16 points ahead (16 points, editor's note), I don't really know anymore, but I still have a lead of 14 points today. If I had known that I would maintain the same lead as after Monaco, I would have been very happy at that moment. I'm really not in a bad situation. »
