Button on pole for the Spanish GP

The qualifying session started calmly, with a succession of best laps with Sutil, Trulli, Vettel, Glock, Buemi, Rosberg. He is the winner of the Chinese Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel, which marks the first big time of this first qualifying phase. With a supersonic time of 1:20:715, it rules the entire paddock. We had to wait for the exit of Felipe Massa, the fastest during free practice in the morning, to see this time beaten. With 1, he takes the advantage over the peloton. Nakajima (20?484??1) is the third driver under 20?818??. Glock limits him in the last seconds of Q1, like most of the drivers. Only Raïkkonen, second fastest in the morning, did not emerge and was eliminated in Q21! The same error which earned the same sanction for Massa in Sepang (Malaysia). Bourdais, Kovalainen, Sutil and Fisichella are also eliminated at this stage of qualification.

Buemi, once again ahead of his teammate, did not wait to relaunch in Q2. He sets a nice time, before seeing the pack drop below 1:21??, notably with a very aggressive Vettel. The German took first place (1:20:220) before Webber settled everyone by approaching the next bar, in 1:20:007. Barrichello is the first to go below this mark with a superb time (1:19:954). Despite very good times, some drivers fall by the wayside. This is the case for the world champion, Lewis Hamilton (1?20??805), as well as for Nakajima, Piquet, Heidfeld and Buemi.

Trulli and Glock, often the first to exit, set the first two times in Q3. Barrichello takes over (1:21??442), being dispossessed in the process by Vettel (1:21??301), still very aggressive. The Brazilian, determined to show that his motivation is intact, takes back his property immediately (1:20??762). Discreet until then, Button waited until the last moment of Q3 to set the reference time (1:20:527). After the various interims during free practice, the leader of the world championship reaffirms his status. Despite the progress of many teams, the Brawn GP driver is still one step ahead. And will once again be the man to beat on Sunday in Montmelo.
