Button, regularity rewarded

Jenson Button will have experienced a marked season divided into two very different phases. In the first months of the year, the British driver was able to benefit from a car above the rest. Ross Brawn having exploited the FIA technical regulations to perfection, the single-seater of the team of Brackley imposes itself on all terrains and humiliates the top teams, McLaren et Ferrari on your mind. Winner of the first Grand Prix of the year, Jenson Button quickly gained the upper hand over his teammate, Rubens Barrichello.

Victim of recurring brake problems, the Brazilian also sometimes doubted the equal treatment between him and his teammate. But, far from stopping there, the veteran of the field never wanted to give up hope of joining his teammate.

After six victories (Australia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Spain, Monaco, Turkey) during the first seven races of the season, Jenson Button has 61 points out of 65 possible, an almost perfect total. At the beginning of summer, Red Bull returns to the game and seems to gain the advantage over Brawn GP. Lovers of suspense then begin to dream of a return of Sebastian Vettel, winner at Shanghai and Silverstone, or Mark Webber, winner at the Nürburgring.

If Red Bull shows all the qualities of its car, the top teams return to the forefront. Lewis Hamilton wins at the Hungaroring, Kimi Räikkönen at Spa, and the Red Bulls regularly slip away. All the while, Jenson Button never disappears from the points. The only time he didn't score one was in Belgium, where he was knocked out in the first round by the rookie Romain Grosjean. If he no longer wins, the Briton grabs, race after race, points which allow him to keep his lead at the top of the championship: sixth at Silverstone, fifth at the Nürburgring, seventh at the Hungaroring and at Valencia, Jenson Button does not lose never many points over his rivals, especially as they take turns.

Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Rubens Barrichello? None of the three names stand out strongly in the heart of summer, each having the possibility of returning to the forefront. But each of these drivers also missed out on at least one race, allowing the British leader to stay at the front.

The Brawn GP, which many observers saw collapsing at the end of the season, maintains its level. Although it is Rubens Barrichello who generally finds himself at the forefront, the two cars continue to accumulate points. At Monza, Barrichello and Button even achieved the double.

Red Bull finally wakes up and Sebastian Vettel resurrects his title hopes. Back in the game in Singapore, where he finished fourth, “Baby Schumi” re-motivated his troops to go for a title that they did not have the audacity to want more than anything. At Suzuka, the German wins and maintains his chances of catching up with the world champion. Before the Brazilian Grand Prix, the German could still come back to Jenson Button. And Rubens Barrichello, qualified in pole position, had every chance of being able to threaten his teammate. My racing circumstances decided otherwise.
