Carey: Longtime fans will have to accept the changes

Liberty Media has not yet gone into detail regarding the measures that the American group which holds the rights to the F1 intends to put in place, but the director of the discipline Chase Carey already expects to have to convince the most irreducible public.

“It’s probably people who are early fans who loved what they grew up with. They represent the basis of the discipline and historical fans are therefore essential, said Chase Carey at the British Racing Drivers' Club Awards held last week. But we want to interest a new audience. For this, we must find solutions in order to respect the historical part and what made this discipline so special while attracting other people. We need to interest a new generation. »

F1 has already tried various solutions to liven up the races by modifying the regulations with for example the implementation of DRS, the ban on refueling, a new qualifying format... Some of these measures have however been criticized by part of the public .

“It starts with the spectacle offered on the track. We can make the competition better, improve the action. Around that, we want to make sure we capture the public's imagination. We use the word 'show' and that's what it should be.", added Chase Carey.

In order to bring F1 closer to the public, Liberty Media notably organized roadshows in the city center on the sidelines of the Grands Prix which met with great popular success. An event of this type will also be held in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) a few days before the French GP which will be contested on June 24 at Paul-Ricard (Var).
