Christian Horner: “We didn’t have Ferrari’s pace”

Despite the podium won by Sergio Pérez, the British boss looked like he was having bad days after the second retirement in three races for Max Verstappen.

Christian Horner: “We didn’t have Ferrari’s pace”

We imagine the contrasting emotions that must run through the camp Red Bull. What happened to Max's car?

Until we bring the car back, it's just speculation. Max smelled gasoline, it appears to be a fuel system problem, external to the tank. Everything has been quarantined. The parts will be sent to Japan (at Honda. Editor's note) and we will try to understand the problem as quickly as possible. This is bound to be a very frustrating race for Max. However, we didn't have the rhythm to Ferrari today, so congratulations to them and to Charles (Leclerc. Editor’s note). They have a great car, they suffered less with tire degradation. Fortunately, Checo had a superb race and brought back the points for 2e instead.

The Scuderia seemed to have a margin over the rest of the field. Were you surprised by their rhythm?

We thought we were a little closer, but they were in the right performance window and we weren't there. They have fewer problems than the others. Our tire problems weren't as bad as the other cars, but it definitely put us behind Leclerc.

A word on this return to Australia and this new layout of Albert Park. What did you think of it?

Firste DRS zone (added, then deleted after EL2, read our decryption. Editor's note) would not have been too much. We would have seen a lot of additional overtaking. But it was a great weekend, with a fantastic atmosphere. We always feel welcome every time we come here. Unfortunately we weren't able to fight for victory, but we are very happy to have returned to Australia.
