As the season of Formula 1 approaching its end, the traditional waltz of penalties for mechanical changes takes place. For the Russian Grand Prix, contested on Sunday in Sochi, no less than five drivers will start from the back of the grid, regardless of the qualifying results.
In addition to the two Toro Rosso drivers Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley, Daniel Ricciardo et Max Verstappen (Red Bull) change V6 Turbo Hybrid engine block. The two men from the Red Bull clan went back to version B of the engine proposed by Renault. In addition, Max Verstappen has a new electrical box and new batteries in Russia.
As happiness never comes alone (nor in fours), Fernando Alonso (McLaren) is also relegated to the last places on the grid. The Spaniard swapped his old Renault engine for a new engine + electronic gearbox + battery pack.
With five drivers penalized, the formation of the starting grid risks causing some headaches in the paddock…
