System inventor Hans dies

His name probably doesn't mean anything to you, but his influence in the world of motorsport has been major. Doctor Robert Hubbard, creator of the Hans system, died on Tuesday February 5.

Le Hans, the anagram for Head And Neck Support (“Head and neck support” in the language of Molière), was a real revolution in the field of security. Developed from the mid-1980s in the United States, Hans helps reduce trauma to the cervical spine, better known as “whiplash”, anderadicate skull fractures during frontal impacts keeping your head at shoulder level.

Doctor Robert Hubbard, with the help of General Motors and then Ford in the 1990s, refined his product, for which he held the patent. The Cart (ancestor of theIndyCar) is a pioneer in making Hans par obligatory in 2000. Nascar, reeling from the death of Dale Earnhardt (who died of a fractured skull at the Daytona 500 in 2001), followed suit in 2002.

La Formula 1 will decide on the obligation of the port of Hans in 2003. Since then, many disciplines have done the same.

Passionate about the history of motorsport across all disciplines, I learned to read thanks to AUTOhebdo. At least that's what my parents tell everyone when they see my name inside!
