Discover the three F1 concepts for 2021

After a nice leak on social networks regarding a single-seater concept for the 2021 season, Formula 1 decided to formalize three concepts this Friday noon. The objective of these three versions: to allow drivers to better follow each other on the circuits and thus to attempt overtaking maneuvers more easily.

“When we started our research for 2021, explains Ross Brawn, Motor Sports Manager for Liberty Media, we quickly established that the single-seaters have a lot of difficulty following each other. A car loses 50% aerodynamic downforce when it gets within a few lengths of an opponent. That’s a lot of performance gone. »

The former technical director of Benetton, Ferrari or even Mercedes estimate that the project “is about 80% advanced”. The other goal of this aerodynamic revolution is to increase the sexy character of single-seaters. “We want hot cars. We want F1 cars that are better than what you see in video games, F1 cars that kids will want to have hanging in their room. »

Enough chatter, what do these concepts look like? Let's start with the first version, undoubtedly the wisest of all. It was designed as a priority to better visually integrate the Halo, subject of numerous criticisms in 2018. The lines of the bodywork are soft, thanks in particular to the removal of the appendages on the front wing and the sidepods.

The second concept “is more extreme”, confirms Ross Brawn. The shape of the front wing is modified, as well as the rounder sidepods. Mini shark fins are stationed behind the front wheels and in front of the rear axle. Another element serves as a central pillar for the rear wing.

The last concept frankly towards the aesthetic revolution. The shape of the fins is unique, and according to Ross Brawn, many bodywork elements serve to reduce air disturbances when the wheels pass. “We’re starting to look at parts that can stabilize airflow. It’s a process that matures as we work on it. »

Liberty Media and F1 have just over a year to explore these concepts further. The final design is planned for the end of 2019. So, which F1 do you dream of for 2021?
