While Max Verstappen welcomes his 4th success of the season in an interview after his new victory in Barcelona, Sergio Pérez is in discussion with Helmut Marko and Christian Horner. A contrast that perfectly illustrates the Mexican weekend. His face marked by disappointment, he did not let his frustration escape when he was in turn questioned by Pedro de la Rosa. The pilot Red Bull played the model teammate card by highlighting the team result.

However in Spain, Sergio Pérez could have hoped for better than this second place with his Red Bull. After Max Verstappen's mistake at turn number 4, the Mexican saw himself climb to the top of the podium on Sunday, as he confided: “ I think so, especially at the beginning when I gave the position to Max, thinking I would get it back later. But then we exchanged our strategies, he opted for three (pit stops. Ed.), I opted for two. »

Two different strategies for Red Bull in Spain

After his first tire change, Sergio Pérez found himself just behind the battle between the world champion and George Russell. With a better pace in the race, he asked to pass Max Verstappen, confident in his abilities to quickly clear the lead. Mercedes and thus be able to take the Dutchman in his wake. On the radio, they preferred not to respond favorably to his request and he lost precious seconds behind the two cars.

Salvation finally arrives on the 26th lap for Sergio Pérez who overtakes his teammate who left in the pits. The damage is done, the two-stop strategy is no longer possible in Spain and the Red Bull driver must be content with 2nd place and the point for the best lap. It's hard to digest, but it turns out the three-stop strategy was better and I think I didn't have a very optimized two-stop strategy. It was a bit frustrating on my side, but at the end of the day it's a good team result, we're now top of the constructors' standings, so that's something I'm very happy with. »

A model teammate at Red Bull, Sergio Pérez says he is there to win. The prism of a renewal of his contract within the Austrian brand has certainly taken precedence over these ambitions in Spain. “ There are little things that we will discuss internally, just to understand what happened, because when you are driving you don't understand much of the big picture. » In Monaco (May 27-29), team instructions could resurface on Saturday in qualifying with the importance of pole position to win in the Principality.

No suspense, we know who is number 1 in the Horner / Marko duo gang! Perez is a water carrier like Barrichello was for Schumacher a few years ago and like Sainz risks becoming at Ferrari...
