EL2: Hamilton in the garage, Rosberg in the lead

Nico Rosberg set the best time on the first day of testing for the Singapore Grand Prix. The pilot Mercedes took advantage of the evening session to complete the lap of the Marina Bay circuit in 1'44''152, improving by 1''7 the initial reference previously signed by Max Verstappen (Red Bull) who is the only one to benefit this weekend from the evolution of Renault's Power Unit.

The Dutchman finished third, four tenths behind the German, closely following Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari). His teammate Daniel Ricciardo has moved ahead for its part Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari).

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) took seventh place between Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso), but the three-time world champion missed around a third of the second session due to a hydraulic leak after complaining of overheating in his cockpit.

The Briton, who was unable to set his best time on ultra-soft tires, was not the only unlucky one since Romain Grosjean (Haas) was only able to complete a dozen laps at the end of this first day of testing. The Frenchman, victim of a leak in the first session, made a mistake in the second by losing control of his VF16 in the last corner. The former GP2 champion had to sit the remainder of the session in the garage after damaging his rear suspension.

Fernando Alonso (McLaren) finished in ninth place before stopping on the track once the checker flag was raised. The MP4-31's gearbox appears to be at fault.

Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) completes the top ten in FP2, ahead of Sergio Pérez (Force India) and Jenson Button (McLaren). Esteban Gutiérrez (Haas) finished 13th ahead of the Williams by Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas and Renault de Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer.

The Manor completed the list behind Romain Grosjean and Marcus Ericsson (Sauber). Pascal Wehrlein was three tenths ahead of his teammate Esteban Ocon.
