As part of the announcements from the World Motor Sport Council published by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile this Saturday March 19, the FIA detailed the operation of the Remote Operations Center (COD or ROC in English) on the Grands Prix of Formula 1.
More trivially called VAR in winter 2022, the system works from the first meeting of the season in Bahrain. While the F1 cars are racing on the Sakhir circuit, a remote control unit has been deployed at the FIA premises in Geneva (Switzerland).

The Remote Operations Center will work in addition to the Race Direction, which remains very present inside the Grand Prix paddocks. The COD will not interrupt the work of the Race Direction and will not cause any slowdown or delay in decision-making according to the FIA. Its role is purely advisory.
The COD will provide the Race Direction with substantial multimedia resources: 140 audio and video sources, as well as data collected from more than 10 simultaneous football matches.
Finally, the COD provides an additional resource for the FIA to replay and thoroughly review Grand Prix events and decisions made by stewards in order to refine and improve procedures for the future. It has no regulatory powers and cannot be used to reevaluate or change past decisions.
