Fernando Alonso, still a driver Alpine in 2023?

While Fernando Alonso celebrates his 41st birthday this Friday in Hungary, his contract still ends this season. If he says he wants to extend Alpine to regain success with the French team, the retirement of Sebastian Vettel has just freed up a seat.

With the announcement of the retirement of Sebastian Vettel, it didn't take long before Fernando Alonso be him also the center of attention. Having just celebrated his 41st birthday this Friday in Hungary, the Spaniard has a contract which ends at the end of the season. But let the supporters of the double world champion rest assured. The Asturian Bull has no plans to leave the paddock at the end of the season. The pilot Alpine is determined to extend the adventure within the French team, at least that is what he says in public.

« As I said from the start, the summer break will probably be the time where I need to sit down and wrap something up and yes, the summer break is from Monday », sketches Fernando Alonso. With three drivers under contract this season, Alpine has for the moment chosen to wait Oscar piastri. To avoid losing its young Australian talent, the French team could loan it to Williams or another team in 2023. This would allow them to see their 3 drivers evolve in Formula 1.

Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin in 2023?

For this hypothesis to be real, we still need to sign Fernando Alonso's contract extension. And with the departure of Sebastian Vettel, a new door has just opened at Aston Martin. So could we imagine, the double world champion alongside Lance stroll. " All teams are an option as long as they do not have two drivers signed, lLike I said, my priority is to be with Alpine because you know we have been working and developing this project for two years now, we are more and more competitive and my wish is probably to stay, but we have not completely sat down and moved things forward, but everything continues »

Without the opportunity to join one of the top three teams on the grid, the driver Alpine concedes, he is obliged to trust a team project which will become competitive. And currently, the fourth force on the grid is the French team. So everything seems to be settled? “ I'm going to be on vacation, the bosses will be on vacation too, so we have to organize video conferences. When 2 parties want to agree on something it takes 10 minutes and it won't take more than 10 minutes », Says the Spaniard.

But the 41-year-old pilot remains evasive about his future. If the negotiations do not advance, one of the possible reasons would come from the Spaniard's salary demands. So we can very well imagine Aston Martin capable of offering the desired contract to Fernando Alonso. This would not be the first time the two parties have come into contact. “ We talked in 2020 when they were very competitive, winning races and podiums, before I came back it didn't go well and I came back with Alpine and I'm happy where I am », says the double world champion.

It's only Formula 1 that attracts him at the moment

If there is one thing that Fernando Alonso clarified in Hungary, it is his wish to stay in Formula 1. Laurent Red had raised the hypothesis of seeing the Spaniard land in Endurance at the end of his experience in car. But this change is not going to happen in 2023. “ Like I said, my challenge is big here, trying to win for my comeback and it's not easy. I'm not in one of these 3 teams (Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes), but I don't have any other challenges in mind, all the other categories don't give me any appeal at the moment, so I'm happy where I am », Specifies the Spaniard. It remains to be seen in which seat Fernando Alonso will play in 2023. AlpineAston Martin, McLaren, all options are possible.

The Bull of Asturias replacing Vettel at Aston? Lawrence Stroll needs a big name to move his team forward (he won't be able to do it with his son) and as he was able to recently refinance Aston with new shareholders, he can write the check requested by Alonso and avoid recruiting a young man who would ram his son. If Lawrence Stroll really needs money, he can always hire Latifi and thus have a 100% Canadian team to play at the back of the grid!!
