Gasly: Beating Renault, “as long as it’s feasible, we have to believe in it”

Twice present in the top 10 of Friday free practice in Mexico City (Mexico), Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) continues to prove his ease of adaptation with the Italian team.

“It was a very solid day, he told reporters. We performed very well with the medium tires and it was with this set that I achieved my best lap. However, I still see areas for improvement, particularly with the soft tires. »

The objective of this end of the season, in addition to showing itself well with Helmut Marko with a view to a potential return to Red Bull, is of challenge for fifth place in the Manufacturers standings Renault

The two teams are only separated by six points. “There are still four races left, they will be important because of the close fight among the Manufacturers, believes the Frenchman. Objectively, it looks difficult because they seem a little more regular than us.

But obviously, as long as it's feasible on paper, we have to believe in it. There could be importunities. Six points behind, it seems low, but at our level it's a lot. You don't get six points easily every weekend. However, if we scrape off one or two units per Grand Prix, we could double them.

I have to continue as I am doing now. We are happy with our understanding with the team since my return to Spa. I scored points on three of the last four events. »

As for the rest of the Mexican meeting, Pierre Gasly would like to miss the top 10 gate, just to be able to choose the set of tires for the departure. “We do not want to start with the C4 tire (the soft tire) on Sunday. An 11th place in qualifying would suit us well. I managed to set the seventh fastest time on Friday, but I don't think it will be possible on Saturday.

Everyone struggled with the C4 tire. It causes a sudden drop in performance over the course of the run. On one lap it's okay, but after that it's difficult. But it's the same for everyone. »
