Gasly unable to overtake Ricciardo: “I'm going to have nightmares about this rear wing”

The Italian Grand Prix Pierre Gasly can be summed up as a race spent admiring the McLaren MCL36 Daniel Ricciardo until the latter gave up 9 laps from the end. Despite his proximity on the track to the Australian, the Norman never managed to find the opening. However, he tried his luck but even his attempt at the first braking did not pay off since he had to short-circuit the chicane and return the position to his counterpart.

« I'm going to have nightmares about this rear wing, he joked when he talked about the fight with Daniel Ricciardo on the microphone of Canal +. It was a race against myself. Frankly, I tried everything to put as much pressure on him as possible but he didn't make a single mistake. I was too slow in the parabolic so I was never close enough to try anything. I tried twice at the first corner as soon as I saw the slightest opportunity. I tried everything but unfortunately it didn't work. I was going crazy in the car."

Gasly maximizes his chances in Italy

Obviously disappointed at not having managed to get the upper hand on the McLaren driver, Pierre Gasly finally grabbed the 8e place and pocketed 4 points. Enough to leave Italy with a smile after so many difficult races this year.

« In the end we are having a very good race, he points. We finish behind the top three teams (Red Bull, Ferrari et Mercedes) and the McLaren of Norris. Given our performances at the moment, this is the best we could hope for. »

Happy to have finished the European tour in the points, Pierre Gasly is looking ahead and in particular to the Grands Prix of Singapore and Japan where the F1 has not occurred there since 2019. “ I am extremely looking forward to going back. These are circuits that I love. We haven't been there for a long time in Singapore. It's an exciting track with a lot of pace. Same for Suzuka and with Honda it’s always a very special weekend. I will take the next two weeks to recover my health and arrive in good shape in Singapore."
