George Russell (Mercedes) surprised everyone by taking the first pole position of his career by dominating the qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Briton appeared at the last moment to snatch the best time from Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who will accompany him to the front line tomorrow. “ It's incredible. This pole comes after our worst Friday of the season, says George Russell. We worked so hard because we didn't know which way to go. And there, this last round went very well. When I crossed the line, I saw on the big TV screen that I was first. It's an exceptional feeling."

By picking up the first pole position of the season for Mercedes, George Russell displayed the continued progress of the W13, although Lewis Hamilton disappointed during his lap in Q3 (7th following a DRS problem). And knowing that the Silver Arrows often perform well on Sundays, the first victory could well come on Sunday… “ We have to concentrate on tomorrow's race of course. We are not scoring any points with this pole position. But hey, the Ferraris showed excellent race pace on the long stints on Friday.
