Hamilton on his clash with Alonso: “It’s my fault”

Lewis Hamilton hoped to have a shot at Spa-Francorchamps with a Mercedes W13 which he finally considered as a “racing car.” » Nevertheless, the Silver Arrows did not show the expected pace during the qualifications, designated as the worst known by Toto wolff, and were content with 4th and 5th places on the starting grid. A grid on which Max Verstappen et Charles Leclerc, penalized, rushed far.

After taking advantage of the failed departure of Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), Lewis Hamilton tackled Fernando Alonso (Alpine) at Les Combes to steal second place. Too optimistic in his attempt, the seven-time world champion closed his trajectory on the Spaniard and took off. Furious, his former teammate at McLaren blurted out on the radio: " What an idiot ! We got off to an incredible start, but he only knows how to ride alone in front when he starts first! » A spectacular accident which was above all synonymous with a premature retirement for the Briton, on foot to reach the pits.

“It was my fault, it was my mistake, recognized Lewis Hamilton at the microphone of Canal Plus. I was in front, on his side, but he was in my blind spot. I didn't give him enough space. I thought I'd given him enough, but watching the action again, that's not the case. I paid the price. I was in front, but it's my fault. » A weekend to forget for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, who is already looking forward to 2023.

Fernand had better keep quiet in the heat of the moment! As if he had never made any driving errors...
