Hamilton: “A return of Alonso would not be bad for the sport”

They were teammates, going so far as to tear each other apart during their year together at McLaren in 2007. But today this period seems ancient history between two of the drivers who will have marked the last decade.

Si Lewis Hamilton is today the undisputed king of F1, Fernando Alonso has taken a step back from the queen discipline of motorsport, focusing on its commitment to the next Dakar in Saudi Arabia, after having conquered the 24 Hours of Le Mans and WEC with Toyota.

But the Spaniard still remains at the heart of rumors of a hypothetical return to F1, while a 2021 season looms where many drivers will be at the end of their contracts and where the category will undergo a major technical overhaul.

A “2.0” career for Alonso which would not displease Hamilton. "I'd just be happy not to be the oldest here, Hamilton commented mischievously in recent days.

Fernando is obviously a well accomplished driver. It's interesting to see that in the past, pilots have come back, like Michael [Schumacher]. I haven't spoken to Fernando, so I don't know how he feels or how much he misses it, but I don't think it would be bad for the sport.

In the end, there are a lot of young people coming up and there are only 20 places. He also had his period, but if there are no other good young people coming in, there is certainly room with the possible replacement of some who are currently here. So I would be delighted. »

For Fernando Alonso, the undisguised objective in recent months remains the Indianapolis 500, in order to add the Triple Crown to his list of achievements. And also erase the hard setback this year, with a non-qualification.
