Honda must define its development schedule

The famous development tokens allocated per season for developments on V6 turbo/hybrid Power Units are living their last hours in F1, since their disappearance was planned for the 2017 horizon.

While waiting for these new regulations, engine manufacturers are continuing their work with the limitations in force. In the Honda clan, the priority remains the search for performance, after a difficult 2015 in terms of reliability.

“Our development of the Power Unit is progressing, comments Yusuke Hasegawa, F1 Honda project manager. However, we have not yet confirmed which races we will make updates via the token system. »

The Japanese engineer believes that this weekend's Spanish meeting should not put as much emphasis on Power Units, compared to the first events of the year. “The Barcelona circuit is a technical track which is less demanding on the Power Unit compared to the first four races, but much more on the balance of the car. »

During the last Grand Prix in Russia, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button had put the MP4-31s in the points, the Spaniard managing to finish sixth despite having to save fuel.
