The radio message first aroused our appetite… and our curiosity. Lap 28: while the Catalan sky was full of black clouds, George Russell warned his team that drops of rain were starting to fall in turn 5.

However, a few laps pass and still no sign of rain on the track. The Briton then asks his team if other drivers have reported rain on the circuit. Negative, then respond Mercedes, and for George Russell to admit: “I think I mistook my sweat for rain”.

Russell admits a situation “embarrassing”

After the finish of the Grand Prix, where George Russell finished in 3rd place after a good comeback from 12th place on the grid, the young Englishman explained this confusion during the press conference.

“As for the sweat, my hair was hanging down during the first stint, I think I didn't quite get it tucked into my hood and it bothered me because it was in my peripheral vision, confided the Mercedes driver. And then, as I was sweating because they weren't in my hood, they were dripping down my face. And when I braked, it fell on my visor. With the gray clouds and the water spots on the visor, I thought it was rain. So it was a little embarrassing. »

Still on a dry track, George Russell then carried out a few maneuvers to move up to 3rd place, including overtaking on Carlos Sainz at the first turn. His engineer then congratulated him by saying “Solid work”, to which the Briton replied: “Just solid? », with an ironic air.

“It was just a joke with Marcus [Dudley, his race engineer], underlined George Russell. Toto likes big messages of encouragement on the radio. Marcus and I sometimes say, 'Being calm in a situation is sometimes the best way to get a result.' It was a pretty cool pass on Carlos and yeah, I thought it was a little more than 'solid', but it was just a good laugh. »

Thanks to his great comeback, George Russell scored his first podium of the season in Barcelona.
