It’s a Lewis Hamilton all smiles who climbed onto the podium of the Spanish Grand Prix. However, it was not a victory that the Briton celebrated, but “only” a second place, very far behind Max Verstappen…but there were reasons to be happy, Sunday at Mercedes. The Silver Arrows, carried by a highly evolved Mercedes W14 and exempt from its “zero pontoons” concept, appeared as the 2nd force on the field, well ahead Ferrari et Aston Martin.

A small leap forward which remains significant of the work accomplished by the German team at the start of the season. Although qualifying did not go as planned, with Hamilton 4th and Russell 12th on the grid, the race pace was good enough to place both cars on the podium. For Lewis Hamilton, this podium reflects new optimism at Mercedes.

“This is what we hoped for when we brought the new features, confided the seven-time world champion of Formula 1. This result is really what we were working for. It's incredible and it's the result of the great work done by the people at the factory, who keep their heads down. I hope everyone is very proud at the factory. »

Hamilton congratulates Mercedes weekend

Thanks to this excellent overall result, Mercedes overtook Aston Martin in the constructors' championship with 152 points, compared to 134 for the British team. “We just have to try to continue this momentum. We were faster than the Ferraris and the Astons today, it’s really huge”, underlines Lewis Hamilton, who thinks that this result is due to the better pace of the W14 and not to the average performance of his rivals.

“I like to see the glass half full, so I think we generally had a better rhythm than them. Collectively, as a team, we generally did a better job, made fewer mistakes, delivered throughout the sessions, with excellent strategy. »

Revival of Mercedes but drop in speed both at Aston Martin (where the intermittent of the show finishes in front of Fernand who did not want to overtake him!) and Ferrari which seems to be sinking with a great incomprehension on the tires...
