Jean Todt puts forward the idea of reintroduction of gasoline refueling

Banned in 2010, notably for cost reasons, could fuel refueling make a comeback in F1 ? A question regularly brought up again which reappeared on the sidelines of the British Grand Prix.

Jean Todt, president of the FIA, has in fact put forward the idea of such a return, if by chance an analysis comes in this direction. The French manager sees this in particular as a potential response to a parameter that has become problematic for many drivers or teams: the mass of current single-seaters, today 743 kg.

"It's something we've discussed, explains Jean Todt cited by Reuters. I insist that we analyze what it would mean if we reintroduced refueling.

Because if you reintroduce refueling, you will have lighter cars at the start of the race and you can have smaller cars. »

With the emergence of Power Units, the question of fuel management and the deployment of hybrid energy has taken a more than essential role in racing strategy today, even if the gasoline allocation has recently been increased at 110 kg for 2019.

A possible return of supplies could also lead to more strategy, but also to less “economy” on the part of the pilots. The question of costs, put forward each time by the teams, remains to be resolved.

« Sometimes I hear it will be more expensive and honestly it makes me smile, indicates on this subject the former boss of Peugeot Sport and Team Ferrari. When I see the size of the hospitality establishments, I don't think it's the price that will be a barrier. »
