Jenson Button won by himself

Jenson Button took a big step towards victory on Sunday in Melbourne by putting on slick tires very early, after five laps of the race, two laps before his main rivals. By betting on the track drying out, the Briton gained precious seconds, his opponents remaining on intermediate tires until the 8th lap. Thus, Button went from sixth to second place, then taking advantage of the retirement of Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) to take control of the race.

« He played a decisive role in achieving his first victory », says Martin Whitmarsh, happy to see the World Champion make an astonishing debut with McLaren. " It was he who called us. He was allowed to do so “, he says regarding changing tires. “ He was really daring and that allowed him to win. »

Setting off again on a track that was still wet, Jenson Button went slightly sideways twice, before continuing to drive on a track that was gradually drying out. “ He had to stay calm, preserve his tires, drive cleanly and keep a good pace. »

« He drove masterfully in these difficult conditions., continues Whitmarsh. When he slipped in the first sector, it was a little worrying but it was a gamble well taken on his part and which is to his credit. »
