Kobayashi in action at Suzuka, Merhi in testing

A lack of Kamui Kobayashi at the Japanese Grand Prix would have caused a lot of noise since the Caterham driver is the only Japanese holder in F1. But the Asian's situation is delicate since he seems to be in the hot seat after his replacement at the Belgian GP by André Lotterer. Roberto Merhi still seems to be at the forefront to take his place as he will take part in his second test session this Friday at Suzuka. “I want to thank the team after my first outing a month ago in Italy (at Monza)”, comments the Spaniard who is competing for the title at Carlos Sainz Jr in Formula Renault 3.5 Series. “I won’t be starting from scratch this time and I will be able to get into the rhythm more quickly. I have never driven in Japan and will have to learn the track in addition to continuing my training on the car, but driving at Suzuka is a dream come true. »

However, Kamui Kobayashi will be well aligned on the starting grid for his national Grand Prix. The Japanese driver will be particularly keen to shine in front of his public who supported him to return to F1. “I’ve been waiting for this race for a year. This Grand Prix at Suzuka has always been special for me because it is here that I took part in my first test session in 2009 and where I achieved my first podium in 2012 (3rd with Sauber). I'm able to come back here thanks to the support of my fans. Unfortunately, I can no longer fight for the podium this season, but I will do my best to reward the public. »
