Kobayashi scores his first F1 podium at Suzuka

While Sergio Perez managed to shine at Sauber to sign a contract with McLaren for 2013, Kamui Kobayashi was still looking for his first podium in F1. After obtaining third place with Jenson Button's penalty, the local driver of the event managed to maintain his position by resisting the return of the McLaren driver at the end of the race to sign his first podium in F1 after those obtained by his compatriots Aguri Suzuki and Takuma Sato.

The Japanese admitted that he hoped to achieve a result of this order even if his race was long and difficult. “It was a fantastic race, I was working hard to get a podium and my teammate (Sergio Perez) had already achieved several (three). I have already had good opportunities on the starting grids but I have never been lucky (last episode at Spa-Francorchamps). I had a lot of problems during the starts but this time I had a good start from third place. I wasn't on the front row but I had a good feeling because we noticed that we had good pace in the race. I was convinced I could get a podium after gaining a position after the start. I still had trouble resisting Jenson, the last stint was particularly difficult. This result is incredible, I also achieved it in front of my audience. I am happy for the spectators present at the circuit. »

Sergio Perez was less fortunate as he retired in a gravel trap after a spin.
