Kubica close to combining DTM and F1 role in 2020

After his departure from Williams, Robert Kubica should find a starting role in another championship next year, while keeping one foot in the paddock F1 via a test pilot role.

The Pole, who made an incredible comeback in Grands Prix this season, announced in Abu Dhabi that he had decided on his plans for 2020 and hopes to be able to announce them soon.

« For my part, I made my decision, Kubica said. I don't want to go into details right now. There are still some complexities to resolve and we need to make sure it works for everyone. Once we have everything lined up, it shouldn't take too long.

I say that but I’ve been talking about it for September and it’s almost December. I would like to combine different programs and that requires a lot of work and compromises. But I think the ingredients are in place. Now it's a matter of mixing them well so that the mayonnaise takes ».

Kubica has already had discussions with Haas, which is looking to strengthen its simulator program. The Pole was also approached by Racing Point where Lawrence Stroll has held him in high esteem since his time at Williams. However, the engine supply Mercedes of the Silverstone team would pose a problem for BMW in the event that the former winner of the 2008 Canadian GP were to defend the colors of the propeller brand in DTM

However, it seems certain that Kubica will compete in the German touring car championship, while his sponsor Orlen is keen to continue to benefit from the media exposure that F1 provides him.

« I've been saying I'm looking for a big challenge for three months and DTM is the most likely option at the moment, added the Krakow native. It is probably one of the most difficult categories outside of F1, a very specific championship, and complicated for beginners. ».

Kubica will be replaced at Williams by Nicholas Latifi, whose tenure was confirmed this Thursday morning at Yas Marina
