THE FIA and the FIM hand in hand for safety on the circuits

The recent and tragic accidents that have occurred in motorsport have reminded us that safety remains an increasingly important area of work in motorsport.

In order to improve this safety at the circuit level, the International Automobile Federation and its motorcycle counterpart have announced that they are working together on future improvements for tracks around the world.

One of the first areas studied consists of the paints affixed to different areas of the circuits. The FIA and FIM have therefore developed a new paint standard, which can be used for track boundaries, curbs or even asphalted runoff areas.

“The new standard sets out a number of performance criteria for paint, including friction properties and visibility in various conditions, specifies the FIA.

This result will ensure that the paint used on circuits around the world will perform uniformly in dry or wet weather, reducing the risk of accidents due to sudden loss of grip. »

This first collaboration must be followed by future work, both on improving the safety of the circuits and that of the drivers.

Spa-Francorchamps is working in particular, via an investment plan of €80 million, on this aspect, with a widening of the track planned, as well as new clearances, or the return of gravel traps.
