The FIA imposes a second flow meter for 2020

Faced with the supposed ingenuity of certain racing teams F1 in their quest for engine performance, the International Federation continues to strengthen its control arsenal. The regulatory body thus distributed a third technical directive in one month to inform the teams that a second flow meter had to be added downstream of the existing device on the current V6 turbo/hybrids.

This decision follows the request for clarification from Red Bull before the United States Grand Prix around the phenomenon of “aliasing” and its alleged use by a competitor, at random Ferrari, to bypass the flow meter. The purpose of this sensor is to ensure compliance with the fuel flow, the limit of which has been set at 100 kg/h since 2014. These suspicions had already given rise to a first technical directive which did not fail to cause a stir in Austin ( see AUTOhebdo #2241).

Teams have until the start of the 2020 season in Melbourne (March 13-15) to comply. The Federation even encourages them to install their second flow meter by the second week of winter testing in Barcelona (February 26-28) in order to ensure the proper functioning of this additional sensor in Australia. Enough to stifle once and for all the inclinations of some to want to play with fire? Not sure when we know that the thieves are always one step ahead of the police...
