FIA allows Honda to develop its V6

According to BBC Sport, Honda obtained authorization to develop its Power Unit throughout the 2015 season at the end ofa meeting which was held last Monday with representatives of the FIA. The Asian manufacturer was left behind when its competitors obtained a thaw in the development of the 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6, the Team Ferrari having detected a flaw in the regulations. As the Honda engine was new, it was initially expected to be approved at the end of February.

Honda will be able to improve its V6 throughout the season, but engineers will remain subject to certain conditions. The number of modifications authorized will be set according to the average tokens used by other engine manufacturers. Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault have 32 tokens (parts that can be developed) on the 66 modifiable engine elements that they can replace throughout the year. “If the three engine manufacturers have eight, seven and five tokens in reserve at the start of the season, the new engine manufacturer will be able to make six modifications,” explained Charlie Whiting, the FIA race director.
