The FIA wants a random Safety Car at each race

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) expressed this Sunday the wish to see the Safety Car appear once per race in Formula 1 from this season. A measure intended to boost the spectacle during the Grands Prix, after an opening round in Melbourne (Australia) where only five overtaking maneuvers were carried out.

According to a source close to the matter, the Safety Car would intervene unexpectedly in the middle of the race, on the orders of the panel of stewards, without warning the competitors. The neutralization would last three laps, to ensure that the gaps are canceled and that the restart causes overtaking. “Some teams are very positive about this new development, because they could catch up with the top teams by adopting a judicious strategy”, indicates this indicator. The circumstances of the excess Sebastian Vettel  (Ferrari) On Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) under virtual safety car were analyzed by the FIA, which saw it as an excellent way to spice up the outcome of the event, while rewarding the tactical sense of the teams.

However, this possible introduction does not please everyone. “ What will they be able to invent next? A fourth DRS zone on all circuits ? It’s ridiculous, the others just have to work better on their performance.”, castigates Lewis Hamilton. « If F1 wants to Americanize, they couldn't have done better, ad Fernando Alonso. In my time, people didn't have time to complain about the lack of spectacle, the single-seaters made noise and we overtook each other like crazy! »

However, some pilots are delighted with this project. “Bwoah, it’s really a good thing to attract young people to F1, our audience is getting too old, even my son falls asleep in front of his TV”, indicates veteran of the discipline Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari). “We will talk about it internally but This should allow us to save our engine. All means are good to extend the life of our Honda unit and avoid having to change it every weekend, I can only encourage this project.", entrusts Brendon Hartley (Toro Rosso).

More information to come.
