Ferrari's right of veto 'absurd' for Claire Williams

Claire Williams, the Team Principal of the stable of the same name, was taken aback by the veto power of Scuderia Ferrari. The stable of Maranello is the only one able to block rule changes that it deems contrary to its interests and those of the Formula 1

Mattia Binotto, Ferrari team principal, said in Barcelona two weeks ago that this advantage protected not only the Scuderia but also all the teams on the grid. Obviously, this Italian thoughtfulness does not seem to move the other team bosses, if we judge their reaction.

“I find it absurd to be honest, declared Claire Williams at a press conference in the Monaco GP paddock. I already find that there is a problem in our discipline which is far too democratic. I've always been quite open about it. F1 and the FIA should have more power with the regulations. This is handled in a bit too collegial a way, which is detrimental when we all have our own agendas. »

“We must think about the future of our discipline and its sustainability, protect it and its DNA, and this can be very difficult to do by committee. I don't believe that a team should have a right of veto, it makes no sense." repeated the deputy director of Williams F1.

The latter received the support of other teams necessarily unfavorable to the exception available to the Prancing Horse.

“F1 must progress and not be in a defensive attitude, added Cyril Abiteboul, Director of Renault Sports Racing. It is probably not a good thing that a structure has the capacity to block a process that can be positive for the discipline. We fully recognize Ferrari's specific value in the discipline which can probably be reflected in commercial agreements rather than governance. »

Zak Brown, the executive director of Mclaren racing who had already mentioned his opposition to the special rights of the Italian team, took the opportunity to confirm his position.

“It is very kind of him (Mattia Binotto, Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari) to offer to represent the interests of the teams, but I believe that we have varied interests and we would prefer to represent them ourselves in the negotiations”, said the American businessman.
