The Circuit of the Americas in Austin (Texas) hosts this weekend the 19th round of the 2022 season of the World Championship Formula 1. This will be the tenth time that COTA will host the United States Grand Prix.

A Grand Prix whose first edition took place in 1908 with the victory of Frenchman Louis Wagner, on a Fiat. At the time, this race was organized in Savannah (Georgia). It was fifty years later, in 1958, that the US GP made its appearance on the official Formula 1 calendar. On the Riverside Intertational Raceway (California), inaugurated in 1957, it was the regional stage of Chuck Daigh (Scarab-Chevrolet) who then won. Since then, the United States Grand Prix has taken up residence on several circuits as it has come and gone on the calendar. After Sebring (1959) and a return to Riverside (1960), Watkins Glen was the venue from 1961 to 1975. Then, the Phoenix urban circuit hosted three editions from 1989 to 1991. The United States is returned to the calendar at the dawn of the 21st century, in Indianapolis, from 2000 to 2007, before arriving in Austin in 2012.

Many rookies competing in Free Practice 1

In Texas, it is Lewis Hamilton who distinguished himself the most with five successes (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017). Four other drivers won on this route: Sebastian Vettel (2013), Kimi Räikkönen (2018), Valtteri Bottas (2019) et Max Verstappen (2021). In 2020, the Grand Prix was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This 2022 edition of the United States Grand Prix will be marked by a significant number of rookies lined up for Free Practice 1: Theo Pourchaire (Alfa Romeo), Robert Shwartzman (Ferrari), Logan sargeant (Williams), Alex Palou (McLaren). Antonio Giovinazzi will also be lined up by Haas during this first driving session of the weekend which will take place on Friday at 21:00 p.m. French time.

You will have to stay up late to follow all the sessions of the United States Grand Prix. Free Practice 2 will take place at 00:00 on the night of Friday to Saturday. These will last 1h30 to allow the teams to test the 2023 Pirelli tires. This was initially planned for the Japanese Grand Prix, but weather conditions changed the program. Free Practice 3 will take place at 21:00 p.m., followed by qualifying at 00:00 a.m. on the night of Saturday to Sunday. The start of the race is scheduled for 21:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.
