Accustomed to pole positions snatched in the last moments, this is a “gift” pole that we offered to Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque was certainly the fastest on the time sheet, but above all took advantage of the lap aborted by Max Verstappen at the end of the session. The Dutchman, almost a second faster in the 2nd sector, was urgently called back to his pits before being able to complete his last lap, offering an almost unexpected pole to the driver Ferrari.

“It was a very tricky qualifying session, confided Charles Leclerc in the post-qualifying interviews. Q1 and Q2 in intermediates, in Q3 we didn't really know what to do. We made the choice of soft tires at the very last minute and it paid off. It was so delicate! I missed my last attempt, so I didn't think I would get pole but it was just enough. I am very happy. »

“We are missing data for the race” considers a cautious Leclerc

The Monegasque narrowly obtained his 9th pole position in 2022: Pérez and Hamilton failed only a few thousandths behind him. “It was very special. All qualifying on street circuits is at the limit, and even more so when it's wet like here. There are parts of the circuit where it's wet and you can lose the rear of the car. But I managed to do a pretty clean lap and it worked out well,” explained the current runner-up in the drivers' championship.

A pole position which will also have been difficult to build, after a lack of running and several problems encountered during free practice. “I'm very happy with today's result, especially considering the difficulties we experienced on Friday. We only did a few laps yesterday due to some problems, but we made up for it well. We are missing data for the race but if we execute everything perfectly, I am sure we can win. » Charles Leclerc, already pole winner in Singapore in 2019, will have the opportunity on Sunday to win his 4th Grand Prix this season. His last victory dates back to the Austrian Grand Prix last July.
